Homecoming Ideas That Students and Alumni Will Love

Homecoming is an exciting, memorable time for high school students! With a parade and football game that brings the whole town out to cheer, culminating in a fun, formal dance, it’s a tradition that has been going on for generations. With so many different events throughout the week, consider these homecoming ideas to make it that much more memorable.

So, how can you turn your Homecoming week into a fun event that brings all the students together in the ultimate high school experience? Tie your Homecoming festivities into a fantastic theme, connecting Spirit week festivities at school, parade float ideas, and of course the big dance and, students will have a blast (and so will the teachers and faculty!). Need some inspiration? Consider these homecoming ideas for your school!

Travel Through Time

Many high schools have been around for decades (or longer!), and Homecoming is a great opportunity to look back on the school’s history. For Spirit Week, create a day for each decade, starting with the 2000’s and going backward. Create floats around the decade the school was founded to celebrate all the years of excellence, which the alumni will love, and even carry the blast from the past theme into the dance!

While the Homecoming Dance itself is often formal, you can carry a vintage or retro theme into the decorations and music for a fun, lively experience that even the administration can get behind!

Look to Your Mascot

Depending on your mascot, you may be able to derive your theme from it. For example, if your school is represented by the Vikings, have a Viking-themed Spirit week with parade floats made to look like Viking ships, dance decor inspired by the icy seas of Norway (just don’t serve lutefisk!) and enjoy a week’s worth of horned caps!

This can also work for a mascot like the Lions, Tigers, or Bears (oh my!), by encouraging jungle, forest, or safari-themed floats, decorations, channeling the mascot through face paint during Spirit Week, and so much more.

Embrace Local Culture

Of course, homecoming is about school spirit, but it’s also about home, so embrace your town by creating a theme that celebrates your culture! If you’re in Louisiana, create a theme around Mardi Gras, such as a Bourbon Street parade, Dress in Purple, Green & Gold Day, and have the Homecoming Court wear Mardi Gras masks at the dance. On the other hand, if you’re in a rural area, embrace a country theme or take advantage of any professional sports teams in your region by dressing in their colors one day during Spirit Week. Claim your history and channel some hometown pride to go with your school pride this Homecoming.

Raise Money for a Local Charity

No matter what your theme is, tie it back to hometown pride by using it to raise money for a local charity, such as a camp, food pantry, or youth center. If you do a crazy dress-up day, have students pay $1 to take part.

Print out fliers about the charity and ask some members of the football or basketball team to pass them out at the beginning of the parade and have more members people near the middle and end carry buckets to take up donations from spectators (and ask someone from the charity to sit as Grand Marshall). Finally, see about making a portion of concessions or tickets to the game and dance go to the charity. In just one week, you can make an incredible difference while you celebrate your school spirit.
